ZWiki 0.46.0 requires BTreeFolder2? when adding a new ZWikiWeb? in the ZMI. However, not all Wikis are best contained in a BTreeFolder2?. The Add method should check if BTreeFolder2? is installed and fall back gracefully using a normal folder if it isn't, or provide the user with a choice in the Add form.

Yes, I made a mistake, wrongly assuming the BTreeFolder2? was available in all zopes from 2.7 on. It used to fall back gracefully.

The reason it tries to use a btree folder is for better performance, memory efficiency and manageability when wikis grow large (>1000 pages). If you don't use a btree folder from the beginning, it can be difficult process to convert to one later when you're running short of memory on a hosted server. I hoped to make sure that hurdle would not arise. Also I didn't want it to use btree sometimes and plain folders at other times for reasons obscure to the user.

In favour of plain folders, they are more usable in the ZMI for small wikis, and this is the great majority of zwikis.

So I guess the options are just use plain folders always, or when BtreeFolder2? is installed give a choice with clear docs in the add zwiki form.

It now always uses Folder.
