Square brackets allow freeform page names, but these things in a page name might cause problems:

[a ]? in a page name]
[&dtml-thiswouldbeaproblem ;]?
[causing confusion ]?
[& so on]?
[ref1]?

unless/until the footnote is added, which it will then link to by preference

[1]?
[1]?will link here instead of to page 1

In short, in page names it's best not to include (a) a closing bracket or (b) dtml or formatting codes that the wiki might try to render, or (c) to use a page name of the form "refN".
