This renders it less useful than it might be for tracking changes (!). What's the rationale for it? Or, is it something that no one asked for or there's a technical impediment?

FYI, I'm trying to devise a little mechanism for tracking, in my zWiki, revisions to weblog postings (my weblog is separate, powered by blogger, but into a Zope site). I realize diffs will disappear when I pack the ZODB, but: it's a place to start!

I was going to say we couldn't do this because of our reliance on the ZODB's history mechanism.. but actually we can. It just needs a little TLC from some developer, in Diff.py. The real problem is that these go away when you pack, as you know. There are other zope storage backends which can solve this but that route is non-trivial.
