-Hi all, Bug Day is in progress - remember to drop by #zwiki and tell us
-your favourite bugs..
-
-Also: how many people use or did find useful the KnownIssues page ? It
-is a manually updated summary of frequently-encountered issues,
-especially for new users who might not find things in the tracker. It
-hasn't been completely current for a while. Is it worth the work to keep

-for instance if you type zwiki.org/ in, then the URL will be zwiki.org/FrontPage , but I would like keep the URL zwiki.org/ yet showing the FrontPage This might be a simple question, but I couldn't figure out how to do it right, although I noticed that this works with Plone (with the default_page). What should I write in the index_html method to achieve this? Thanks!

-If it's just the front page, you can change the index_html DTML method -
-instead of redirecting, have it return the page contents directly.
-Something like::
-
- <dtml-var "aq_parent.FrontPage(REQUEST=_.REQUEST)">
-
-should do it.

-Until there are only ASCII characters in the title of the default page, URLs remain readable. Once the title of your Home Page has accented letters, then these default URLs will be just too ugly to be displayed (e.g. Keresőoptimalizálás »» Keres_c5_91optimaliz_c3_a1l_c3_a1s ), that's the reason why I am looking for a solution for this. (sidenote: non-English speaking people often don't get the concept of what FrontPage is, and sometimes my sites running with Zwiki and having a bold FrontPage title on the home page were referred to as a site named 'FrontPage')
-Also from a search engine optimisation perspective it is not ideal if your visitors start to link to your site as zwiki.org, zwiki.org/, zwiki.org/FrontPage, because these sites are considered as different web pages to certain extent by search engines.

-That's a good point about urls. We still need an improved
-canonicalIdFrom method that can substitute similar ascii letters for
-accented letters where possible, instead of the ugly hex codes. I think
-it was you that suggested this in the past ? That might help some. See
-http://zwiki.org/InternationalCharactersInPageNames and
-http://zwiki.org/736 . I'd love to make these urls better for non-ascii
-users - maybe some of you should club together and commit a few dollars
-towards funding the issue, which would allow me to work on it right away ?
-
-I take your point about the different between zwiki.org, zwiki.org/, and
-FrontPage, but.. I think search engines generally know at least the
-first two are the same - they're not going to visit both of those. And,
-I think it is more consistent and less confusing overall to always use
-the .../Page url. Otherwise, when someone hits the edit link it jumps
-from zwiki.org/ to zwiki.org/FrontPage/editform , and both urls are
-exposed anyhow - it's better to pick one and use it consistently
-everywhere. The front page will work the same way as the others, you can
-more easily add things like /upgradeAll to the url manually, it's clear
-where to set permissions, etc.
-
-That index_html trick should certainly allow you to customize the
-appearance of the initial url though. Apache rewrite rules would be
-another way.

-Thank you for the quick answer! Don't know why but somehow the above snippet didn't work, so I started to fiddle with it (without really having any clue about it :) and I found that this worked::
-
- <dtml-var "FrontPage(REQUEST=REQUEST)">
-
-Hope it won't break anything though:) Well, you are right, we shouldn't have this as a default method, but I think it is worth to mention this trick in the Cookbook and the pages dealing with Default Page concept (if you find this snippet OK).
-
-Well, as for the accented letters' issue: yes, that was me :) As you can see the problem keeps on bugging me :), but since then the Plone folks have implemented an URL canonsation, which as far as I can tell works just great with quite a few languages, so perhaps the task is "only" to reuse the code already written for Plone. (which translates the Russian Изображение дня to izobrazhenie-dnya, the Hungarian A nap képe to a-nap-kepe for instance). How much would it cost (just a rough estimation) to develop this Plone function for Zwiki too (maintaining the backward compatibility with old-style encoded URL's)?
-
-Thanks again, József

-That's currently pretty deeply hardcoded, indeed. Switching the first
-two items of::
-
- return doc + self.renderMidsection(**kw) + discussion
-
-in ZWikiPage.renderMidsectionIn() might be enough.
-
-But what I usually do, since I only occasionally want to show the
-subtopics in a different position, is enable DTML and add an explicit::
-
- <dtml-var subtopics>
-
-wherever I want it (in place of the default).
-
-A third option, affecting all pages, is to add the subtopics call whever
-you want in one of the skin templates, eg in wikipage.pt::
-
- <span tal:content="structure here/subtopics" />
-
-and tell zwiki pages not to display subtopics themselves, by setting a
-show_subtopics folder property to 0.
-
-Does this help ?

-(http://wiki.zope.org/zope2/event.log) and watch it as you create pages.
-If cataloging fails you should get a traceback. Also check zwiki's
-recent changes to see if the page really has been cataloged or not.

-I was just installing and playing around with Zwiki within my current Plone site, (which mostly seems great!), but I noticed that the only WYSIWYG editor that seems to be supported by Zwiki (Epoz) has fallen off the face of the earth. This is sort of a deal-breaker for me, unfortunately, since my site requires WYSIWYG functinoality. Is there any chance that any of the other Plone-supported editors will work with Zwiki in the near-ish future? Thanks!

-Epoz 2.0.2 works fine with ZWiki in Plone 2.1.x and Plone 2.5.x (haven't tested 3.x). Although Epoz appears in the list of installable products in Plone, you don't need to install it in Plone, as Epoz is a Zope product. In fact I recommend do not click the install button in Plone as it could fight with Kupu. We've had in production for almost 2 years now, ZWiki with Epoz 2.0.2, and Kupu being used for all other WYSYWIG editing in Plone. Works fine, and so does the link Simon pointed to. Good luck

-I'm puzzled (and annoyed, more later) by this feature. It seems they're adding WikiLinking support across documents. Bravo! But why the "without the wiki aftertaste" smite? I'm guessing they need to remove the Wiki buzzword and replace it with WikiLink. But even there, the second complaint I've come to know from wikis (first:structure) has been: Knowing WikiNames when editing documents. It's not a taste, but a smell. I wonder how they'll approach that one. I guess it's all in the vernaculars. Happy Friday.

-Zwiki.org is running code from the darcs repository, while you downloaded 0.59. Sometimes "latest" isn't latest :-)
-The code in darcs has numerous changes in respect to the page history. At some point we will have a new release, otherwise you could try getting the code from darcs if you like to experiment, see DarcsRepos.

page history --Simon Michael, Wed, 01 Aug 2007 14:12:59 -0700 reply

Yes, the release process stalled after 0.59 and so that release is unusually far behind the latest darcs repository. Sorry about that.

Plone 3 wiki support --Simon Michael, Wed, 01 Aug 2007 14:25:36 -0700 reply

I guess we need to resolve #1322 and then I could talk to limi about rewording this a bit. We want Zwiki running smoothly on latest Plone again, and to remain as a known alternative folk who need a full-blown wiki in plone.

zwiki.org front page --simon, Sun, 05 Aug 2007 11:09:55 -0700 reply

As I often do, I am glancing at the zwiki.org FrontPage? and thinking one of (too much info|too much clicking|older versions were nicer|etc.). Time for a quick poll!

Considering both yourself and newcomers to zwiki.org, would you rather see a much lighter, less intimidating front page, with most of the content moved off to subpages ?

Or, do you prefer to have all the essential content gathered on one page, including the wiki topic outline (Documentation box), recent pages, etc. ?

FYI: domain renewal in progress --FrankLaurijssens?, Sun, 05 Aug 2007 23:57:48 -0700 reply

Until now, I've used godaddy for my .com/org/net domains. They don't have the best UI in the world but it works for me. I'm sure there's reasons not to use their services, but I can't come up with one at the moment.

updates --simon, Mon, 06 Aug 2007 09:39:58 -0700 reply

A few more wiki updates.. I've been clarifying prose and converting pages to RST here and there. http://zwiki.org/Mail#receiving-mail-from-a-zwiki has a new table summarising subscription behaviour. Also FrontPage? has a limited-width layout which I hope works well enough in most browsers and window sizes - I'm interested in problem reports (especially screenshots). That was inspired by the Easy-2-Read page (see link at the bottom) which I think is right on.

release plans, zwiki in plone --simon, Fri, 24 Aug 2007 12:26:10 -0700 reply

G'day all!

I'd like to break the dry spell and do a Zwiki release soon (Sep 1 ?). This is mainly driven by the need to get Plone 3 support out there (http://zwiki.org/1322). There are a bunch of other things overdue for release too, like persistent page history (http://zwiki.org/47). I had intended to have the all-unicode implementation (http://zwiki.org/1345) in this release, but it's not ready.

The Plone 3 support, especially, needs more love: testing, polishing, thinking about integration issues. As of now it's very basic and barely functional. The more hands involved, the better it will be. Plone 3 is good, and it's worth integrating with it well. NB Plone has incorporated some more wiki functionality in this release (Wicked's (( )) links), but I think Zwiki in Plone is still a valuable option. Zwiki and Wicked fit different needs.

Go go go ;) --FrankLaurijssens?, Sat, 25 Aug 2007 04:16:38 -0700 reply

It's been quiet here for a long time, it's good to see you're back. I've had a busy time as well, but I'll get some breathing space soon.

Go go go ;) --Simon Michael, Sun, 26 Aug 2007 13:35:00 -0700 reply

Thanks Frank, welcome back also. Something I noticed while cleaning up DarcsRepos?: you have a "Plone 3 compatibility" patch in your repo which you should be able to unpull now, I think it has been superseded.

Go go go ;) --FrankLaurijssens?, Sun, 26 Aug 2007 14:03:00 -0700 reply

Fixed, thanks for the hint. Actally, I was quite surprised it kept running for all this time, because I haven't exactly maintaining the server that well lately. I also added the Unicode branch for now, just to check if I still understood what I did last time.

preserving line breaks, formatting quoted messages on rst pages --Simon Michael, Sun, 26 Aug 2007 16:08:31 -0700 reply

FYI, something I discovered recently: in restructured text you can preserve line breaks by prefixing each line of a paragraph with | and a space.

This comes in handy for formatting quoted messages. Zwiki is supposed to recognize message text lines beginning with > and format them with the html blockquote tag, but at least on rst pages this isn't working at all.

On http://zwiki.org/OldLatexWikiDiscussion just now, I prepended the quoted lines (and the preceding So-and-so wrote: line) with |. Now at least the quoted excerpts are readable. We should investigate this a little more and make sure rst and other page types format quoted excerpts properly.

two more notes --simon, Sun, 26 Aug 2007 18:13:23 -0700 reply

Interesting: I just saw the chinese translation of the navigation links, on FrontPage? only, until I did shift-refresh. Presumably this is because I reinstalled PloneAndCMF? (and PTS), FrontPage? is ramcached, a chinese user passed by recently, and the translated version got cached. Something to be aware of! Just shift-reload if FrontPage? ever seems stale.

And: zwiki.org is poised on a knife edge, with 1354 ordinary pages and 1354 issue pages. Looks like quite soon the IssueTracker? will be the bigger part of this wiki.

ZWiki? 0.60rc1 released --simon, Fri, 31 Aug 2007 00:27:58 -0700 reply

Since I'll be away on a roadtrip over the 1st, I have published a release candidate. Now is a great time to install it widely, test, report problems in the IssueTracker?, send patches to DarcsRepos?, clarify CHANGES, and update translations. The final release will go out next week.

The US celebrates Labour Day on the wrong date, but never mind: Happy Labour Day Weekend all you workers!

Hello Simon,

Apologies for not getting back - I've not had a chance to look at it again either, so no change here. We're about to upgrade to v3, so this one may "go away" but if you do find anything, please let me know.

Cheers,
