The Delete Me raids are over and I will see if I can find copies of the former content here that was removed by others here at Zwiki. The story of the Delete Me raids: round one is at DeBruynFairUse? and round two is at JohnDeBruynIsAGoodGuy?.

Some other JohnDeBruyn pages: at WardCunningham's place WikiWiki:JohnDeBruyn and a place that Ward kindly hosts at BridgesWiki:JohnDeBruyn and yet another at BridgesZwiki? which is over at NPI's free Zope sites. Some stuff about the tax lawyer JohnDeBruyn is at http://www.debruyn.com

Hi Simon:

I was just taking a look at Zope Wiki at Zope Org and recalled your layout at Joyful so I dropped by to see where I left off in the experiment that got derailed a couple of years ago. I got into the append mode back when Jim Coplin was running his fishbowl wiki on organization--must have been six years or so ago.

Using email notification with the comment function is really nifty. A page commentor of the wiki school would add the comment, generate the email and then use the edit function to possition the comment.

Where comment was freely available to visitors and full edit limited to regulars the comments could be moved to the appropriate place on the page by the regulars.

The comment function makes for interesting options in a wiki like Jim's fishbowl mode wiki--I think the discussion was conducted on the SandBox page at Ward's place that I created and got it wipped out--but the page lives on--when the page got dumped by someone a couple of years later. I will see what happended to it and link it here.

Or perhaps regulars could more comments to a more appropriate page. Random thoughts perhaps. JohnDeBruyn (May 20, 2002).

Welcome back John. Glad you're liking it.

Hi Simon:

I was Googling for zwiki and zope stuff and ran onto your note in the FreeZope discussion about using the more recent version of Zwiki in conjunction with the FreeZopeHosting at http://www.nipltd.net/ and went on to experiment with an account at http://freezope2.nipltd.net/bridges/bridges/FrontPage where it was like falling off a log to install a full blown Zwiki Web. I do hope they follow through with your more recent version. Thanks for all that you are doing for Zope and Zwiki. JohnDeBruyn (May 24, 2002)

Now this was added with a regular edit. John DeBruyn?

Gone but not forgoten:

JohnDeBruynIsAGoodGuy?

JohnDeBruyn created some experimental pages here as part of his project to explore the use of wiki for accountants. BridgesWiki, [Lnet]?, TcomPages? and the like.

Others saw this as an unscrupulous spamming of zwikiweb and responded directly to reject the "intruder". At this moment I have not read much but it seems to have escalated quickly into some "severe" edits.

There have been periods where I can give very little attention to the site and unfortunately the above coincided with one of these. I regret this and I apologize to John and everyone else for not speaking up sooner to clarify matters:

John checked this out with me early on and I encouraged him to continue his experiments here. This happened in private email, and I can see how in the absence of this information his pages might have appeared inappropriate or insensitive given the overall subject matter on this site. NB that decision is ultimately mine, as chief broompusher and billpayer here. Current ZWikiWeb? content policy is "zope, wiki and other things". Ie I have not yet indicated any topic as being off-limits. We are exploring, and pages are cheap.

I hope this resolves any misunderstandings, that destructive edits can now be reversed, repaired or at least not prolonged, and that all zwiki enthusiasts will again feel at home here. I can provide undo & restoring support two weeks from now. If any other comments seem appropriate in light of the above, please feel free.

Thanks --SimonMichael 2000/09/01

Thanks for the clarifications - yes, it would have been useful to know this at the time (especially since you weren't around when the new topics appeared). However, I think that "... a place to discuss ZoPe, WikiTopics, and other things" is not a place to set up a parochial tax discussion. For me it fatally dilutes what had been a useful ZWiki arena. Why not just set up a separate ZWiki for him? Regardless, I appreciate it's entirely your choice.

I agree that this isn't a good place to run a local tax wiki - I considered these to be short-term test pages and wasn't too worried about them overwhelming the site's focus. (If that problem ever does arise we might want to update the content policy). --SM 2000/09/19
