Hi FloK,

As you refactor this page, it would be great if you could move the content into the Zwiki Administration Guide.

:)

Regards and best wishes,

Justin Clift

FlorianKonnertz, 2002/11/14 08:16 GMT (via web):
Hi Justin, do you really want to move the complete content there? - I don't know yet how large it will grow... :-) - But of course your subfolder advice and this page should go together somehow. cu --FloK

FlorianKonnertz, 2002/11/14 08:35 GMT (via web):
Justin - I copied your subfolder text here, ok? - Do you use subfolders? Can you answer the questions? - Regards, FloK

FlorianKonnertz, 2002/11/14 09:42 GMT (via web):
Todo: Table of contents, local links, reorder sections;

2002/11/14 15:32 GMT (via web):
Thanks for this effort FloK .. I'd prefer this page stand on it's own...theres a lot to grok w/ ZWiki and general Wiki organizatio before diving into SubWikis?. Once the refactoring is complete, I'd prefer we simply point to this page from the [ZwikiAdministrationGuide]? . This is a chapter in and of itself! :-)

2002/11/14 15:36 GMT (via web):

>> Can we have a subwiki as an example for newbies here on ZwikiDotOrg???

This wasn't timely a few weeks ago when I inquired, but best answerd by Simon.

I was specifically looking for a place to demonstrate bugs, though.

JustinClift, 2002/11/14 15:38 GMT (via web):
Heh Heh Heh

Yep, that works.

Was expecting the Admin guide to get broken up into sections and chapters over time as it was. Good to see it's going to be so soon too.

We will need to decide on a Naming Convention for different chapters and similar of it, because if we want to eventually assemble it into something that can be downloaded as a .pdf or a .tgz (.tar.gz) - hopefully - this will be needed.

:-)

Regards and best wishes,

Justin Clift

>> Would it be possible to tie the settings in UserOptions? to the current wiki
>> folder, so a user could have in the parent wiki different bookmarks than in a child wiki

I think an easier hack might be to allow personalized AnnoyingQuote functionality, which displays the last line (booksmarks) of the page: UsernameReminder

I'd probably plop it over the annoying quote or under the Add a Comment button, or abot the text box, like FloK's backlinks.

Good idea, I gonna have this in my NooWiki. --FloK,11-15

Page renaming, SubWiki examples

Ok, let's rename this page to SubWiki. Give some more votes and I'll do so. - [Simon, your comment on the name SubWikiExampleOne]?: I want to add my subwiki setup as another example. What's the best name for this? - Above i used "Use case" => SubWikiUseCases?, because my professor in SoftwareEngineering? loved this word :-) - cu, FloK

Simon Michael, 2002/11/16 17:53 GMT (via mail):
Page renaming, SubWiki examples

I like SubWikiExampleTwo or 2.. I've seen names like this on WikiWikiWeb. Use case isn't quite right IMHO.

FlorianKonnertz, 2002/11/17 19:04 GMT (via web):
Ok, i agree a UseCase? is something different (but it's hard to say what, for me at least), I vote for SubWikiExample1?, -Example2 etc.

SimonMichael, 2002/11/20 10:36 GMT (via web):
http://zwiki.org/subwiki set up.

2002/11/20 20:44 GMT (via web):
Thanks for setting up the SubWiki Simon.

I'm realizing that for easy of use in a SubWiki scenario, the RemoteWikiLinks will have to be very terse, and easy. Brackets don't help. In my case I have many cases of a sub-wiki that doesn't translate well to a WikiName, and I'm not a fan of odd wiki names like PythOn?.. I was considering something like ProjectW? GraphicsW? , where W was short for "Wiki", but a capital W had it's own typing dilema's. Thoughts?

FlorianKonnertz, 2002/11/20 23:33 GMT (via web):
What about additional shortcuts, like PjW?, GrW? ? - Is there any way of avoiding capitals? What about a special key for this? Let's have a WikiKeyboard?, not only WindowsKeyboards? !! :-)

But at least you know now how arduous it is to be (reps.write) german: Every fourth word with capitals - puhhh.... ;-)

FlorianKonnertz, 2002/11/20 23:38 GMT (via web):
Mails from changes on http://zwiki.org/subwiki are not to distinguish from the parent wiki's mails. This is very important!

I meant, it is important, that they can be distinguished!

SimonMichael, 2002/11/22 02:12 GMT (via web):
I forgot, folder title doesn't take care of this any more. I added suitable mail_subject_prefix folder properties which should help. I left zwiki.org with no subject prefix for now.

DeanGoodmanson, 2002/12/04 16:14 GMT (via web):
SubWikiLinking issues detailed

SubWiki:SubWikiLinking created. I'll create a tracker issue if needed.

SimonMichael, 2002/12/04 17:51 GMT (via web):
Dean, you might want to move that up to the main wiki since subwiki is a test wiki that may get replaced. I've copied the relevant front page note from the plone wiki to subwiki/FrontPage.

FlorianKonnertz, 2002/12/12 15:04 GMT (via web):
What about renaming SubWikiLinksTest to SubWikiLinking or SubWikiLinking (Dean!) ?

FlorianKonnertz, 2002/12/12 15:10 GMT (via web):
I finished my SubWikiExampleTwo (PersonalSubWiki?) today. All is fine except for one issue: I copied several pages from the ParentWiki to the new SubWiki. The pages with text+links type throw an unamed error. When addressing them via editform-URL and changing the type, they're ok, but changing back to t+l brings the error back. :-( Any ideas?

DeanGoodmanson, 2002/12/12 16:16 GMT (via web):
How to address pages with same name in the ParentWiki??

Glad you brought this up. Ideally I'd like all the !../WikiLink to be rendered !../WikiLink_, with the underscore being a link to "create in current wiki" , but for now, it's only accomplished by the ZMI. (Which also requires a Catalog rebuild as ZMI changes aren't rolled in.)

There's also the hope that SubWikiRemoteWikiLink:PageName would be the way to explicitly denote and create it in the current SubWiki.

SimonMichael, 2002/12/12 16:16 GMT (via web):
Sounds like a bug, let's see a traceback.

DeanGoodmanson, 2002/12/12 16:19 GMT (via web):
SubWikiLinking, etc.

That page should probably be SubWikiLinksTest, which you could use to verify your "Text + Links" issue ([[[#279 certain page types cannot render parent folder wiki links (issuedtml, issue+links)] certain page types cannot render parent folder wiki links (issuedtml, issue+links)] certain page types cannot render parent folder wiki links (issuedtml, issue+links)])

And the SubWikiLink? s page be a more explanation, tutorial version.

FlorianKonnertz, 2002/12/12 19:07 GMT (via web):
SubWiki text+links error [[[#279 certain page types cannot render parent folder wiki links (issuedtml, issue+links)] certain page types cannot render parent folder wiki links (issuedtml, issue+links)] certain page types cannot render parent folder wiki links (issuedtml, issue+links)]

I put the traceback on the [[[#279 certain page types cannot render parent folder wiki links (issuedtml, issue+links)] certain page types cannot render parent folder wiki links (issuedtml, issue+links)] certain page types cannot render parent folder wiki links (issuedtml, issue+links)] page.

FlorianKonnertz, 2002/12/13 10:44 GMT (via web):
SubWikiLinking

I renamed SubWikiWikiLinks? to SubWikiLinksTest. Now we need a new SubWikiLinking page.... Coming soon...

DTML'ing common stuff

In updating my RecentChanges? to the current, I dn't want to go about changing each SubWiki version (Can't inherit such pages) with every new change. My solution was to put the RecentChanges? code into a DMTL Method in the parent wiki (or root) with a name like "recentchangesdtml" and replace the contents of every RecentChanges? page with < dtml-var recentchangesdtml> . Next time I want to update I just change the dtml method all the changes will be inherited.

Another alternative is to grab the contents of th eparent pages page, and then process and render those on the current page...but that's too mystical for me at the moment, and doesn't sound as fast.

Does anyone see any TECHNICAL problem with this? (Socially it doesn't expose useful code, but that's not an issue for me.)

DeanGoodmanson, 2002/12/13 17:03 GMT (via web):
Page Promotion

RFC: How would you like the "Move this page to parent Wiki" UI to look like?

a) Where would you put that control?

b) How would the Parent Wiki know it has received a new page?

Currently it's a Copy, Paste, Edit/Delete process (Actually "safer" than the ZMI.) No need for a PageMoved? marker with RemoteWikiLinks. :-)

SimonMichael, 2002/12/13 17:17 GMT (via web):
DTML'ing common stuff

If it works for you, then great. I think you can also just acquire RecentChanges? and it will show pages in the subwiki.. this used to work anyway.

DeanGoodmanson, 2002/12/13 18:16 GMT (via web):
Acquiring Recent Changes

Note sure what you mean.

Simon Michael, 2002/12/13 18:25 GMT (via mail):
Acquiring Recent Changes

I mean, call SUBWIKIURL/RecentChanges?. I guess you'd need to present it as a html link.

FlorianKonnertz, 2002/12/16 11:31 GMT (via web):
Page Promotion

This feature would make the SubWiki management really comfortable - a) Where would you put that control? Imo, just put it at the very bottom. - - b) How would the Parent Wiki know it has received a new page? Do you have any ideas yet? What about a marker for singletons in RecentChanges??

FlorianKonnertz, 2002/12/18 11:16 GMT (via web):
ParentWiki page started.

Please have a look.

WikiAcquisition refactoring

I want to do some work on that page, ie. add the "DTML'ing common stuff" from above, but first i want to ask if you agree to my suggestion: Let's move the old discussion there to ie. SubWikiDiscussionArchive section WikiAcquisition and refactor the rest. Ok? Any objections?

DeanGoodmanson, 2002/12/18 18:19 GMT (via web):
WikiAcquisition refactoring

No objections. Much needed, including catalyst.

Hey, have you seen that: The UseModWiki community is adapting our term "SubWiki" :-)

Ooops, i confused UseModWiki with MeatballWiki?. :-/ Please see MeatballWiki:SubWiki instead!

recycle_bin

I just noticed that most of my
SubWikis didn't have a recycle_bin, and that all of my recycled pages were going to the roots recycle_bin folder. This may be desired functionality...or should a "new zwiki web" install create that folder? (I think the current functionality creates it if it can't find it, thus you could put your recyle bin in a root folder, out of your ZWiki's catalog view.)

Also, is the RecycleBin? page default? Otherwise you may want to DTMLify? it.

ramble ramble...

DeanGoodmanson, 2003/01/07 19:39 GMT (via web):
New SubWikiLinking quirk

You can only reference a ParentWiki Page id, not the Page Title. e.g. [IssueNo0002], not [Issue No 0002's Title] This applies to FreeFormLinks?.

This again enforces that having different Page id's than Page Title should be the exception, not a shortcut. (For plurals, etc.) I do not have a problem with the ZwikiIssueTracker implementation, and having a tracker in a parent wiki seems rare.

DeanGoodmanson, 2003/01/22 21:50 GMT (via web):
Acquisition quirk..

When accessing a parent wiki page via sub-wiki URL, the parent wiki page displayed with the subwiki logo. :

 http://localhost/wiki : logo: SPAM , page = EGGs

 http://localhost/wiki/subwiki : logo = Viking

http://localhost/wiki/subwiki/EGGs : Page displays Egg contents and everything *except* the graphic = SPAM.

RegulatingYourPages

I gave this a 2 minute test on a subwiki and it didn't work. I don't need the feature, I was just thinking it would get the "manage this page" controls on the editform.

FloK- You may want to incorporate this into your PageRanking? code. ??

FlorianKonnertz, 2003/01/29 21:25 GMT (via web):
RegulatingYourPages

Hey, i've forgotten about this feature... of course i don't need it too, wikis have to be free (imo). Btw, it doesn't work for me , neither in the main wiki nor in a SubWiki. Where are the settigns stored? There are no properties on a created page.

incorporate this into your PageRanking? code - Do you mean i could use a part of the code for the PageRating? feature? I'm not sure... could you explain further, please? - The rating form has to be on the page itself, every user should be motivated to rate, so it should be easy.

Keep SubWikis out of parent catalog --DeanG, Fri, 31 Oct 2003 14:57:08 -0800 reply
I found a workaround for the Catalog Find's subdirectory traversal.

Find filters on security settings. I have the Zope Poll Product installed but I don't use it. It has a "Vote" security item. In all of the subwiki's, I turned "Acquire Permissiosn" OFF, and made sure Anonymous persmission was also unchecked. Then I cleared the catalog, and re-found, but only finding pages which Anonymous has Vote permissions.

Searching "All Wiki's" -- Fri, 01 Oct 2004 14:39:33 -0700 reply
I had a problem awhile back trying to figure out how to search all wiki's within one form.

At the time someone suggested aquireparent.aquireparent, so at least my SubWiki's could search the parent.

Months later I realized "Hey, I could do 'wikifoldername.subwikifoldername.Catalog(..." and do a similar thing for every wiki in my farm! (But make it a seperate page, or conditional, as it does take time..) and it works.

Now will it be that easy to add in a modern, ZPT and Catalog based SearchPage?? Time, or an expert, will tell... /dtml-boy, out.
