A public system that accepts email and publishes non-obfuscated email addresses will sooner or later be found by the junk-emailer legions. This problem has now officially arrived at zwiki.org. [#66 zwiki.org needs spam protection]?.

comment spamming? --Tue, 10 Feb 2004 09:04:14 -0800 reply

Should such things be discussed here, or on TheVandalProblem page? Or TheRobotProblem? I'm talking about where lots of pages get edited or appended to include a bunch of links to porn sites.

Since I already don't allow editing, but only appending, one approach would be to block an Append that includes a certain string. Has anyone written such code already? (A similar approach could be used to reject an Edit submit...)

Also, has anyone written any code to roll back a page under certain conditions? I have a lot of back-pages that were spammed recently, and would like to run a batch process to clean up those pages - I'd test by looking for a certain string...

Maybe it would be an idea to use something like the (sourcelist of) the SpamAssassin BigEvilList? and to disallow hyperlinks to IP or websites that match that list. See: http://www.merchantsoverseas.com/wwwroot/gorilla/bigevil.cf or http://spamassassin.org/lists.html (bigevil is often discussed on the spamassassin-talk mailinglist).
