After restarting zope and exercising the outline code, I still see:
-rw-rw-r-- 1 simon zwiki 35555 May 30 12:17 OutlineSupport.py -rw-rw-r-- 1 simon zwiki 35648 May 22 15:02 OutlineSupport.pyc
for some reason. I think this is preventing demo of the alternate subtopics style on GeneralDiscussion.
