Square brackets allow freeform page names, but these things in a page name might cause problems:

  • a ] will terminate links prematurely
[a ]? in a page name]
  • on dtml pages, dtml tags will get evaluated
[&dtml-thiswouldbeaproblem ;]?
  • on stx pages, stx quotes, asterisks etc. get formatted
[causing confusion ]?
  • on wwml pages, & gets quoted etc.
[& so on]?
  • on stx pages, a link that looks like stx's footnote urls ([refN]) will not recognize an existing page of that name
  • on stx pages, a link that looks like an stx footnote link ([N]) will work normally,

unless/until the footnote is added, which it will then link to by preference

[1]?will link here instead of to page 1

In short, in page names it's best not to include (a) a closing bracket or (b) dtml or formatting codes that the wiki might try to render, or (c) to use a page name of the form "refN".
